PeacePlayers is a global peacebuilding and youth development organization that uses the game of basketball to unite communities divided by conflict or violence. This photo was captured in NYC and includes girls in our Girls Peace League in Brownsville, Brooklyn along with their coach, Coach Allie. Brownsville has the highest concentration of housing development in the Americas.Young people growing up in the Brownsville community in Brooklyn, NY struggle with a lack of safety and safe places to play, limited access to the full community due to community divides that originated decades ago during drug and gang turf wars but remain today, and limited access to positive adult role models. Often these challenges are results of and continue to perpetuate inequities based on race, geography and class. From a young age young people, girls in particular, fear traveling within the neighborhood due to high incidence of gun and gang violence. A lack of safe playgrounds and safe passages within the community also contributes to youth inactivity in Brownsville. PeacePlayers Brooklyn programs to meet these needs while creating an environment for youth to thrive in their life outcomes. At the heart of what we do are our coaches and coach Allie represents everything that PeacePlayers aspires to. All over the world, from Israel to Brooklyn to South Africa, PeacePlayers is using the power of sport to break down divides, create safe spaces for young people to have positive interactions and access tools and mentorship to become peace advocates in their communities.
