The Air Up There
Category : BASKETBALL IS EVERYWHERE
High atop the mountains of Northern Philippines, in the village of Buscalan in Kalinga Province, home of the last remaining 'mambabatok' Apo Whang-od, members of the Butbut Tribe take the time out in between harvest and tribal tattooing using stick and thorn playing basketball at the base of their majestic rice terraces.. The tribe may not speak English or even the Filipino language, but basketball needs no language and everyone, including visitors and tourists in the village, can take part in a friendly pick up game. The game of basketball bridges the cultural and lingual differences of the Butbut tribe and the world beyond their mountain village.
